A ChrisEffe Romance

THE BAWA RESIDENCE – NIGHT
Chris parks his car behind two cars in his driveway.
One of the cars is for Steve.
The other one is for Effe.
Chris gets out of the car.

He begins to limp towards the front door.
CHRIS

Okay, Effe. Good you’re here. Now you’re going to tell me WHY! Nothing else … just WHYYYY!
His front door is not locked, and he enters the  living-room, and then he stops dead with a shock so great that he has to hold unto the wall to stop himself from passing out on the floor.
Chris trembles, and his legs wobble.
His eyes open wide, and his mouth gapes.
The lights are off, but the television is on, with muted sound, and it illuminates the floor clearly.
Effe is lying on the floor, moaning, and Steve is lying on top of her.
Steve is wearing only his boxers.
Effe is fully clothed, but the buttons of her shirt are undone.
Steve is kissing her neck passionately.
Lying on the floor are two empty glasses, a can of beer, and an empty box of non-alcoholic fruit drink.
Chris leans his head back until the dizziness clears, and then he reaches up and flicks on the lights, bathing the living-room with white light.
Steve jack-knifes off Effe, and whips his head round with shock.
When he sees Chris, his face crumples with acute shock. He jumps to his feet, walks forward, and drops to his knees in front of Chris.
Tears fall down his face immediately.

Effe is still lying on the floor, looking up at Chris with a pained face.
She rolls unto her stomach, and then her body begins to shake uncontrollably with tears.
Steve, still on his knees, reaches out and grabs Chris’ leg.
STEVE

(voice shattered with pain and remorse)

Oh, God, Chris! Please forgive me, I beg of you. I was drunk when she came in. God, man, when I told her you called that you wouldn’t be in tonight, she came on to me, man. She told this wild story about needing a lot of money for some shit, that she’s always fancied me. I was very drunk, man, though that’s no excuse! I couldn’t resist her man! Oh, God, Chris, I’m so fucking ashamed. I’m so sorry, please, forgive me, man. Please forgive me, Bro!
Tears roll down Chris’ cheeks.

He knows that he is close to having a heart attack.
CHRIS

Get up, Steve.
Steve slowly gets to his feet.
Chris suddenly swings a blow at Steve, hitting him hard across the jaw.
The blow flings Steve to the floor, where he lies, dazed and moaning in pain as blood drips from his lips.
CHRIS

You are a shithead, man. There’s no justification for going for my girl, and trying to make love to her, even if she asked for it! I now know the sort of trash she is, but you had no bloody right. Now get the hell out of my house!
STEVE

(his tears falling fast)

No, no, Chris, man! I’m a disgrace, okay? Goddamn it, man, there’s no justification! I deserve your anger and contempt, man, but please, please, Chris, I can’t lose your friendship, man! You’re the only brother I’ve ever had, man. Oh, please…
CHRIS

Forget it, Steve. I’m not mad at you. You deserved that blow, and so we’re done. That girl on the floor ain’t worth fighting over. I just want to have a word with her, so please, just leave. We’ll meet tomorrow. I’ll fill you in then.
STEVE

Chris, please…
CHRIS

Just leave, man! I ain’t got no beef with you!
Steve begins to dress up.

Effe is still lying face-down on the floor, crying.
After a while she turns on her side, and tries to button up her shirt, but she is trembling so badly that her fingers cannot get the buttons into the holes.
She looks at Chris with huge eyes filled with such pain and horror that Chris shakes his head with wonder.
CHRIS

My, God, Effe! Who are you, really? You’re such an actress, aren’t you? You deserve an Oscar for this performance. I know all about your dark life, so stop shitting me, okay? I’m going to get myself cleaned up, and then I’ll come back and we’ll have a real talk to end this fiasco, okay?
Effe tries to speak, opening her lips, but nothing comes out. Chris climbs the stairs to his room.
He goes straight to the bathroom and gets out of his clothes.
He gets under the shower, allowing the cold water to rain down on him.
He slips into his bathrobe, and when he enters the bedroom he suddenly hears a sharp pain-filled scream from downstairs.
Chris rushes out of his room and takes the stairs down two at a time.
Another terrible sight meets his eyes when he gets to the living-room.
His mother is lying on the floor.
Blood is streaming down her face, and she is holding a hand imploringly at Effe.
Effe is standing over his mother, holding a side-table in her hand.
Her shirt is still undone, and her face is bitter as she looks down at the elderly woman on the floor.
Chris runs to his mother’s side and holds her.
CHRIS

Mom! Oh, Jesus, what happened?
There is blood all over her face now, and Chris is terrified.
His mother looks up at him, dazed.

Her voice trembles as she speaks.
MADAM LOIS

Oh, son! Keep her away from me! Please keep her away from me! Doctor Anaman called me and said he treated you. He told me you had been in a fight. I was so concerned and decided to come this night to check on you. I got here and your fiancée wouldn’t let me in to see you! She wanted me to leave, and when I said I had to see you she went mad! She began fighting with me, and then she picked up that side table and hit me!
Chris’ face is filled with uncontrollable wrath.
He gets to his feet slowly and faces Effe, who is looking at him with dazed, pained eyes.
His voice is spilling with fury and contempt.
CHRIS

That’s it, Effe. I’m sending my mother to the hospital. Get out of here before I get back. I don’t ever want to see you again!
Tears roll down Effe’s cheeks.

Her voice trembles.
EFFE

Chris, you can’t do this. What have I done to you? Why are you being so cruel to me? Whatever it is, we have to talk, please. We need to thrash this out. It’s not what it seems like. I did not…..
Chris screams at her.
CHRIS

Get the hell outta of my house, you silly whore! You are no longer welcome to this house. It’s finished, it is OVER! KAPUT!!! Mission accomplished. The fool I have been.
Effe drops the side-table and recoils as if he has struck her.
Her voice is a terrified whisper.
EFFE

Chris…please……
CHRIS

I know all about your sordid life, Effe. Spare me the pain of going through all that mess. I am even ashamed to say what I know. You are really something else. I don’t want to disgrace you in front of my mother, and I don’t want the world to know just how dirty you are. Lie to your family, tell them anything, I don’t care.  The wedding is off permanently. I won’t say a thing because I want to spare you the humiliation. Go on with your sordid life, girl, and stay the hell out of mine! We are done.
EFFE

(body shaking with huge sobs)

I don’t know what has come over you. I don’t know why you are doing this. If I have unconsciously wronged you, I’m sorry. Whatever it is…
CHRIS

(voice is thunderous.)

I said get out!! GET OUT AND STAY OUT, EFFE!!!
EFFE

(moves towards him, wobbling badly.)

Honey, I don’t know what’s gotten into you but I can explain what…
CHRIS

I know what’s going on! Effe. Don’t you dare try your lies with me! The cat is out of the bag. The game is over. You’ve fucking won okay? NOW LEAVE ME THE BLOODY HELL ALONE!!!
EFFE

Honey, let’s talk! Even if we should part, it shouldn’t be like this. I truly love…
CHRIS

(slaps her hands away as she tries to touch him)

Don’t touch me! Keep your damn hands to yourself, woman! Get the hell out of my house right now!
EFFE

(voice a lost whimper now)

Chris…
CHRIS

Get out, Effe! Go away from me!! I don’t want to see your sorry face ever again. Get out before I murder you! I hate you. I curse the day I met you. Get out and leave me to my misery!
Effe turns and flees from the room, and Chris turns to his mother.
Tears spill down his face as he leans over her. There is pain on his face.
CHRIS

God, Mom, you’re bleeding badly. Let me get my clothes and take you to Dr. Anaman!

A ChrisEffe Romance

     The Klever Magg
THE GENTLEMEN’S PERK NIGHTCLUB
Afful turns into a wide driveway, and is stopped by three gun-wielding guards.
Afful winds down the window and pokes out his head. The guards recognize him instantly and  gestures to him to drive through.
They park the car and get out.

Chris looks around; his face looks pained.
AFFUL

This way, Romeo. I took great pains to become a member of this club just for this day. I tell you this; it is mighty expensive being a gold card member here.
Chris looks shocked.

Afful takes him through glass sliding doors, down a big lighted corridor filled with well-dressed people.
He leads him to a door marked PRIVATE, manned by two of the biggest muscle-bound men Chris has ever seen.
They are in black suits and sunglasses.

Afful produces a membership card.

SECURITY MAN

No need for that, Sir. We need to see your friend’s card!
AFFUL

Oh, he’s a special invite. I’m introducing him so … free pass!
The men do not smile, but again the other one who has not spoken steps forward and gives Chris a thorough check.
They let them through.

Afful precrdes Chris into a large, dimly-lit room filled with a lot of influential a looking men.
AFFUL

Look at the great and mighty people queuing to watch sex shows and nude ladies. They are decadent souls, aren’t they?
Chris does not speak.

He watches as Afful approaches a ticketing window and comes back with two passes.
AFFUL

This is very expensive, man. You can’t believe just how much I paid to watch Sighing Sparrow. Oh, forgive me, that’s Effe’s stage name. Here, take a look at your pass.
With trembling hands Chris looks at his pass.

It is a pass for a one-hour show with Sighing Sparrow and friends.
And below the lettering is a bust portrait of Effe.
She looks beautiful and exotic, and she is naked to her shoulders; the tops of her breasts are also naked.
Chris trembles violently.

He speaks in a totally dejected voice.
CHRIS

Oh, God, no!
Chris is directed through a glass door to a dimly-lit private viewing room.
There are high comfortable stools with back-rests and arced glass-topped tables.
Young women barely out of their teens and wearing air-hostess caps, short white skirts with matching long boots and skimpy bras walk from table to table, offering drinks.
AFFUL

There are a lot of viewing rooms, some replete with beds. They are paid for by the filthy rich who can afford a bed and a mate. The amount of screwing that goes on here cannot be matched by the Hollywood porn industry, I tell you.
Chris notices that there is a performing stage in front of him, which is lighted and now shows a very buxom white lady performing a striptease.
She is wearing only a pink G-String, and making lewd pumping actions with her crotch towards the men.
AFFUL

Mind you, the girls here are paid well. Effe is making a lot of…
CHRIS

(voice is vicious and filled with murder)

One more mention of Effe’s name and I’ll kill you, Afful!
The white lady eventually peels her panties down her legs in a sexy way, and kicks it into the audience.
Now naked, she struts on the platform, gyrating her hips and presenting her privates to the ogling men.
She walks off the stage to loud applause and lewd remarks.
The lights dim, and when they come back on Afful speaks excitedly.
AFFUL

Yeah, man, that’s my favorite girl! Sighing Sparrow in the flesh!
Chris bolts upright, and screams silently.

His face contorts into ugly lines of deep pain.
Effe is on the stage!

Her face is nicely made-up.

She looks really stunning.

She is wearing white panties and a matchng white brassiere.
On her head is a white cowboy hat, and her feet are adorned with white knee-length high-heeled boots.
Her lips are painted red, and she is doing a very sexy dance, gyrating her body in a lustful fashion and winding her hips and buttocks in a most captivating way.
The screaming people who are watching peel off Cedi notes and throw them unto the stage.
It seems that Effe is a very popular performer.
Her hat comes off first, and this she throws into the crowd.
She continues to dance, and now she turns her back to the crowd and opens her brassiere hooks, and takes it off.
Still gyrating, she looks over her shoulder at the engrossed men, and then she turns slowly, her hands covering her lovely breasts.
She steps forward, bows, and suddenly her hands drop, and there she stands, exposing her breasts.
CHRIS

(in a whisper of agony)

No, oh dear sweet Lord, Effe, oh no!
He jumps up and runs towards the stage.
AFFUL

(fiercely)

Chris, no, stop! Don’t do that!
He tries to hold Chris back, but Chris chops him across the throat with the edge of his open right palm and Afful falls down, gagging for air.
Chris is pushing people out of his way and running across the tables, sending plates, glasses and bottles flying.
People are screaming in fury at his crazy intrusion.

Some try to stop him, but he punches or kicks them away.
On the stage Effe has kicked off her boots and her thumbs are now hooked into the straps of her G-String, ready to pull it down.
She is now standing fixed like a statue, staring with horror at Chris charging down towards her.
She covers her breasts, and then she turns and runs towards a door at the back of the stage.
Chris lets out a fearsome yell.
CHRIS

Effeeee! Don’t run, you snake! Face me if you can! Perform for me! Kill me now, Effe! Finish what you have started…. just kill meeeeee!!!!
Somebody grabs a wine bottle and attempts to crush Chris’ head with it, but it misses his head and smashes painfully into his shoulder.
With a yell of fury Chris turns and slams a fist into the man’s face, and laughs gleefully when the man screams with pain and blood spurts from his nose.
Chris jumps unto the stage.
Effe is almost at the door.
CHRIS

Efffeeeee! Stop right there!Take a knife and stick it into my heart! Why, Effeeeeee??? WHYYYYYYYYYY?????
Chris runs after her, but suddenly two muscle-bound men in black tuxedos emerge from the door and bear down on Chris.
Two more bouncers climbed in from behind him

One lunges at Chris, catching him behind the knees and bringing him down hard unto the hard stage.
In a flash they are on him, raining hard blows on him.
Chris can hear Effe’s shrill screams.
EFFE

Noooooo! Don’t hurt him! Stop it, please! Don’t hurt him!Stoooop!!!
Chris is aware of being lifted off the stage, and his phone falls down though he does not notice.
He does not struggle.

He has given up.
He wishes for death!!
They carry him out of the nightclub and hurl him into the air, and he falls down hard on the concrete.
He groans, and tastes blood in his mouth.
SECURITY MAN

You keep outta this place. You show your ugly mug here again, we will stomp all over you, asshole!
Chris struggles to a sitting position.
He realizes that they have brought him to the car park, and thrown him against his own car.
A shadow crosses his vision, and looks up warily.
It is Afful.
He is holding his throat where Chris has chopped him.
AFFUL

(speaking with pain)

I guess our business is done, Romeo. I hope you realize now that getting me fired wasn’t worth it because your girl, the angel you thought you had, is nothing but a devil to the core. Taking the wool off your eyes has been physically painful to me, yeah, with all your damn karate stuff. But, man oh man, am I glad! That whore does not love you. She’s in it for the money, and now that you’ve caught her, I guess she will now elope with Bright, her childhood lover. Bye, Romeo, you shithead!
With that Jonathan Afful throws Chris’ car keys at him. He smiles triumphantly,  turns and walks away.
Chris painfully gets into his car and drives off.
He stops the car after a while, and puts his forehead on the steering-wheel and cries his heart out.
His tears are torn out of his shredded heart with massive pain.
After a while he looks for his phone to call Steve, but he cannot find it.
It is lost.
He is bleeding from his nose and from a cut in his scalp. He drives to Dr. Anaman’s clinic to have his wounds treated.
He tells the doctor that he was in a fight with some thugs.
When he leaves the clinic he drives around aimlessly for a while.
Finally he heads home.

     The Klever Magg
OCEAN FRONT HOTEL
Chris parks his car several meters away from the entrance of the Ocean Front Hotel.
He gets out, and Afful appears at his side. They begin to talk, and Afful glances furtively over his shoulder, and quickly directs Chris half-way round the hotel, and they enter through a small side door.
Afful opens another door, and Chris finds himself on a landing that has a steel door marked SECURITY.
Afful taps twice, and the door is opened by a hulk of a man. He is wearing a dark green military uniform, black boots and a cap.
AFFUL

Captain, this is the friend I was telling you about. Chris, meet Captain Bosomtwe. He is the Head of Security here.
CAPTAIN

Come in then. The two of them are now in the garden.
Chris enters a most impressive security room.
It has about thirty CCT screens, arranged in three arced rows. There are some gadgets connected to computers all around and emitting beeping sounds.
The Captain indicates a high-backed chair facing the screens and Chris sits down tentatively.
The Captain stands beside Chris, and then he punches a few buttons on the huge keyboard-like control pad lying on the desk.
The screen directly in front of Chris zooms outward, giving Chris a fully-coloured close-up of an aged man and a woman.
They are sitting side-by-side on a garden bench. The man is speaking, and the woman is listening attentively.
He is holding one of her hands in both of his.

He is in a suit, and their heads are so close together that it appears they are kissing.
They sit up, and Chris has a direct look at her.
She is Effe.
CHRIS

Oh, Lord, no!
Chris’ face screws up with pain.

For a moment it looks as if he is going to faint.
CAPTAIN

The man checked in last night as Joshua Darkwa. He spent the whole night in there, and the whole of the morning. He left late afternoon today and came back with the lady. He is in Room 209.
Chris watches as Effe lifts a hand and smoothes the old man’s hair in a blatant gesture of affection and the man responds by rubbing her right cheek gently.
With trembling fingers Chris brings out his mobile phone and calls Effe.
Chris watches as Effe picks up her handbag and rummages inside.
She brings out her mobile phone and stares at the screen for a moment.
AFFUL

(alarmed)

What’re you doing, man? Don’t let her know you’re here! Don’t give the game away, because there’s more you have to know!
CAPTAIN

Leave the man alone, Jon. Can’t you see he’s hurting bad?
Effe allows the phone to ring through without picking the call.
Chris redials.
On ICT monito he sees the old man urging Effe to pick the call.
EFFE

Hello, my love.
CHRIS

(voice unsteady.)

Angel, are you home yet?
EFFE

What’s wrong, honey? Your voice sounds strange. Are you okay?
Chris closes his eyes and takes fast breaths in an obvious attempt to remain cool.
CHRIS

Oh, I’m fine. Just checking to know if you’re through with the pastor.
EFFE

I’m almost through, my love, and I’ll be going home soon.
His tortured eyes grow into enraged slits as he stares at the screen.
His jaw works tightly as he breathes hard.
Afful touches his arm and shakes his head with concern, warning him not to give the game away.
EFFR

Hello, my love. You still there?
CHRIS

Yeah, yeah, Angel. Okay, you take care then. Will see you tomorrow, right?
EFFE

Yes, my dearest. Have a good night then. I love you!
Chris cuts the call and shakes his head numbly as he watches Effe.
She looks worried, but the old man pats the back of her hand, and presently they both stand up.
They hold hands as they walk out of range of the camera, but the Captain indicates another screen, and a moment later Effe and Joshua Darkwa are seen entering the main reception area of the hotel.
The Captain indicates a third screen. This camera is a shot of a corridor, and the Captain punches some dials on his control board.
The angle of the camera rotates and fixes on a door marked 209.
CAPTAIN

I’m sorry, young man, but I think they’re headed here now.
Chris’ hands are clenched very tightly.

Effe and the old man soon appear on the screen in front of Room 209.
The man opens the door, and the two of them slip inside. The door shuts.
Chris is breathing hard as he throws his head back to stem the flow of his tears.
CAPTAIN

I’m sorry.
CHRIS

Can I stay here for a while?
CAPTAIN

Sure, sure. I’ll go out for my routine checks now.
He leaves the room, and Afful takes out one of his foul-smelling cigarettes.
CHRIS

No, man, don’t smoke that in here. I can’t take it.
AFFUL

But I can take it, Romeo. And anyway, the scent of my smoke is the last thing you must be worried about now, because, as we speak, that pussy you’re waiting to enjoy on your wedding night is being hammered right now by an old bugger!Shit, maybe she’s even giving him some anal!
In a flash and with an enraged growl Chris is out of his chair.
With his right hand he knocks the cigarette out of Afful’s hand and grabs the fat man’s lapels in his left hand.
His voice is filled with fury as he addresses Afful.
CHRIS

You shut your foul mouth. You don’t want me cutting you up to pieces now, and believe me, nothing in the world will give me more pleasure! One more shit out of you and I’ll break all the bones in your body!
AFFUL

(holds up his hands in a supplicatory manner)

Easy, man, easy.
Chris holds him a moment longer, and then he pushes the man away with disgust and begins to walk towards the door.
AFFUL

I don’t think you can take any more shocks, Romeo.
CHRIS

There’s more?
AFFUL

There’s worse. If you confront that girl now, Chris, you’ll never know what she’s really capable of.
CHRIS

But I can’t take it anymore! I’m dying in here! I have to speak to her!
AFFUL

I understand, but you have to get the whole picture first, man. If your girl leaves here, tonight, she’s not going home. I can show you where she’ll be headed next, and believe me, it will blast out your heart. Can you take it? Can you be man enough to wait?
CHRIS

Oh, God, oh dear sweet God. Oh, Effe, what are you doing to me?
He drops to his knees in front of the huge chair and puts his face in his hands.
He grips the arms of the chair tightly, and his body begins to shake uncontrollably as the tears are wrenched from his soul and dragged through his shattered heart.
Chris waits at the hotel for three hours
He moves up and down, and he looks deeply agitated.
Afful and the Captain sit still, looking at him intently.
The Captain speaks suddenly.
CAPTAIN

The door is opening. I think they’re done.
Chris bolts upwards and stares at the CCT screens. The door of Room 209 opens fully, and Effe and Darkwa walk out.
The old man is now wearing trousers and a white T-shirt. They embrace quickly, and then Effe turns and walks away.
Joshua looks after her, and then he makes a victorious sign by punching the air with his right fist.
He turns and enters the room, and the door closes.
With a groan Chris dashes to the door. He grabs the handle, but Afful runs at him and grabs his arm tightly.
AFFUL

No, man, nooo! Don’t confront her now! There are more things you got to know!
Chris punches Afful, sending him sprawling. Frantically he tries the door again, and this time it opens a crack.
He begins to pull it wide, but suddenly Captain Bosomtwe is on him, pulling him back.
Chris shrugs free and pushes the Captain against the door, causing it to slam shut again.
He clamps an arm against the throat of the Captain.
CHRIS

(in an enraged voice)

You keep the hell away from me! I’m going out there to speak to my woman, and I swear by my father’s grave that if you try to stop me, I’ll kill you!
He hurls the Captain away, and reaches for the door knob.
Afful, still rubbing his jaw, reaches into his coat and brandishes a pistol and points it at Chris.
AFFUL

Calm down, you inexperienced fool. Just calm down, or I swear you’ll force me to use this!
CHRIS

Go right ahead and shoot! Shoot now, or I swear I’ll take that gun from you and stick it up your ass so deeply that it’ll replace your twisted backbone!

.

Afful’s face is filled with fear now.

His hands tremble, and he licks his fat lips apprehensively.

.

He shoves the gun into his belt and raises his hands.
AFFUL

Okay, Romeo, if that’s how you want to play it, fine!
CHRIS

(screaming)

That’s exactly how I wanna play it, punk!Open this gaddemn door NOW!!!!!!
AFFUL

Your girl defamed me, and made me lose my job. I only want you to know the truth about her, and although I know the truth hurts, you got a right to know.
CHRIS

Then why are you stopping me from speaking to her?
AFFUL

I was stopping you because the whole truth hasn’t come out yet. If you confront her now she can deny all the charges. But I want you to witness her shame in reality.
Chris ignores him.

The Captain punches a button, and the door opens.
Chris begins to step out.
AFFUL

Your fiancee is a stripper!
Chris freezes.
He grips the door handle tightly, and his teeth grate together with uncontrolled wrath.
He rushes at Afful and slaps him across the mouth. Afful crashes to the floor, and blood spurts from his mouth and nose.
CAPTAIN

Hey, man, stop that nonsense! Stop it right now or I’ll have my men tear you to pieces.
Chris does not look at the Captain. He pulls Afful to his feet and draws back his right fist to smash the man’s face in.
Afful, voice brimming with fear, begins to speak quickly.
AFFUL

It is true! It is true! She is not going home! She goes to the Gentlemen’s Perk nightclub three days in a week. She strips, and men fondle her. Right now she is not going home! She is headed for the nightclub to make more money as a whore!
CHRIS

(screaming in agony)

YOU BLOODY MOTHERFUCKING LIAR!
AFFUL

Then let me show you! If you doubt me postpone this beating till we go to the nightclub right now, and then you’ll know for real! Let’s go right now!
With a roar of pain Chris flings Afful away from him with distaste.
Chris falls to his knees and doubles over, clutching his stomach tightly.
CHRIS

Effe, oh Effe! EFFFEEEE! WHY’RE YOU DOING THIS TO ME? WHY’RE YOU KILLING THIS HEART?
Thirty minutes later Chris and Afful leave the Ocean Front Hotel in Chris’s car.
Afful is driving, and Chris takes out his phone.
AFFUL

What the heck are you doing now? Still calling her?
CHRIS

Shut the fuck up and drive!
He dials and listens.
CHRIS

Hello, Steve boy. Look, pal, I can’t be at home tonight, okay? Something cropped up. Will tell you about it tomorrow. Just listen, man!
He listens for a while again.
CHRIS

Look, simmer down, okay? I’ll tell you about it tomorrow as I said. Listen, I think my house is not locked down well, and last night the security guy called in sick. Think you can go sleep at my place for me? Will be in tomorrow morning, I promise. Thanks, man. I owe you one. Goodbye.

THE FOCUS SUPERMARKET – THE NEXT DAY
Chris is in his office. His coat is draped on the back of his huge swivel chair.
His tie is loose, and the first two buttons on his white shirt are undone.
The laptop is on, and on the desk in front of him is a huge file containing documents that he is perusing.
He leans back and pinches the bridge of his nose. He sighs deeply and rotates his neck in an obvious attempt to ease a painful spot in his neck.
A terrible expression of pain flashes across his face as he recollects Effe embracing the Koffie man again.
The door opens and his mother enters and looks at him with a worried expression on her face.
MADAM LOIS

Wedding panic taking over your soul again, my prince?
CHRIS

(smiles wanly at his mother)

You could say that, but I’m cool, really.
MADAM LOIS

But you look worried. Haven’t seen that look on your face since your dear Daddy died. Something you want to tell your Mommy about?
CHRIS

No, Mom. I’m fine, really. Are you ready to leave for that appointment with Dr. Anaman?
MADAM LOIS

Yes, son. Just a routine checkup, he says. Anyway, Chris, there seems to be something funny about the figures from the Electronics Department.
CHRIS

For an old woman you sure do have a sharp brain. Yes, I noticed, and that’s why I’m now going through their reports all over again. I think Mr. Forson, the Section Head, is getting a tad greedy.
MADAM LOIS

I’ve never trusted that old frog, but you always insisted on giving him a chance!
CHRIS

It seems to be my failing, this kind of blind trust I have in my fellow men.
MADAM LOIS

(raises her eyebrows and cocks her head to one side)

Are you speaking double meanings here, son?
CHRIS

No, Mom. Go on, ran ahead. I’ll have a complete picture of Mr. Forson’s dealings by tomorrow.
MADAM LOIS

Okay, my cherished boy. Have a good evening then. And my greetings to Effe.
CHRIS

Sure, I’ll tell her. Say hi to Doc for me too.
His mother leaves the office. A moment later his phone rings. He glances at it and notices it is Effe.
A grimace passes across his face, and he continues to stare at the phone until it cuts off.
He waits, and then it begins to ring again. He picks it up and puts it to his ear.
CHRIS

Hello, Angel.
EFFE

Chris, my dearest, please forgive me, okay? I couldn’t wait for you this evening. I had to rush to church.
CHRIS

Bad news?
EFFE

Oh, no, no. The pastor wanted to see me for something urgent. He wouldn’t elaborate. Hope to see you tomorrow.
CHRIS

I was hoping to see you, Angel. But that’s okay, see you tomorrow, and please do take care.
EFFE

Chris?
CHRIS

Yeah?
EFFE

You sound distracted and distant. Something bothering you? You’ve been a bit strange since last night. You want to tell me about what’s bothering you?
CHRIS

I’m fine, love.
EFFE

No, my dearest, I know you. There was a great change in you last night. Want to talk about it?
CHRIS

I guess I’m scared of losing you, Angel.
EFFE

Oh, darling. Stop torturing yourself with such thoughts. You can take my love for granted. I can never stop loving you.
CHRIS

Glad to hear that, Angel. Alright, I’ll see you tomorrow. Take care, my love.
EFFE

I love you, Chris. I love you so much. Bye.
Chris drops the phone and clasps his hands together in the form of a silent prayer, and exhales heavily.
CHRIS

Oh, Effe, my love. Please, don’t betray me!
Two hours later Chris walks out of the sliding glass doors of The Focus Supermarket.
More shoppers are trooping in, and he almost collides with a tall, dark handsome young man in a nice suit who is speaking and laughing with his companion.
YOUNG MAN

Oh, sorry, Sir.
CHRIS

That’s alright.
Chris begins to smile, and then he realizes that the man’s companion is Elaine.

He looks shocked.
CHRIS

Elly!
ELAINE

(smiles happily and gives Chris a hug)

Hello, Chris. You’re closing early today. I wanted to give you surprise in your office.
CHRIS

I didn’t know you were in town.
ELAINE

Aw, sorry, dear. You didn’t think I was going to let you get married without being there to help? I took a few weeks off to come down, and of course Frank here wanted to meet my folks before flying back to London, so here we are.
CHRIS

Oh, I see. Frank? Introductions are in order, don’t you think?
ELAINE

Oh, forgive me. Yes, of course. Frank, meet Chris Bawa, an old flame. Chris, Frank Stiles, my fiance.
The two men shake hands.
FRANK

Hey, man, pleased to meet you. Elaine told me a great deal about you. I gotta thank you, though, for letting her go ’cause I’ve fallen so much in love with her!
The three of them laugh, and Frank throws his right arm around Elaine’s shoulders, draws her close, and plants a kiss on her lips.
ELAINE

Behave, Frank! Anyway, Chris owns this fabulous supermarket.
FRANK

Hmm. That’s great, man. Anyway I’m representing the Blue Star group of companies. We want to invest in the oil industry in Ghana, and I’m here in discussions with the Government. We’ve almost wrapped up the deal. I plan to settle down here by December ’cause I’ll be in charge of the  African operations. And of course Elaine and I will be married immediately.
CHRIS

Congrats, folks. Enjoy your stay, Frank. I’m so glad you’re making Elaine happy. But I got to run now, okay? Hope to see you again soon.
FRANK

Yeah, yeah. Hope to see you at our wedding, man.
ELAINE

Of course Chris would be there. Wouldn’t you, darling?
CHRIS

Sure, wouldn’t miss it for anything.
Frank puts his arm around Elaine’s waist and they go through the sliding doors into the supermarket.
Chris shakes his head and turns away sadly.
CHRIS

Why do I feel this twinge of jealousy? Oh, Effe, Effe, Effe! Don’t hurt me.
Chris drives out of the car park.

His phone rings, and he picks the call.
CHRIS

Hello?
AFFUL

This is Afful.
CHRIS

What’s it this time?
AFFUL

Do you know a man named Joshua Darkwa?
CHRIS

(swings off the road and parks the car)

Who doesn’t? He’s one of the wealthiest men in the country, and owns a number of prosperous companies. What’s he got to do with me?
AFFUL

He’s got a lot to do with you, bugger. Do you know he is an Elder of the Mount Golgotha church, the same church your wife-to-be attends?
CHRIS

(clutches his chest as if in pain, and his voice becomes wary)

Once again what’s that got to do with me, worm?
AFFUL

Tsk, tsk, tsk, dude. No bloody insults again. Just called to tell you your beloved darling has just checked into a hotel with this wealthy old dude. I don’t know what she told you, but if you wanna find out, just come to the Ocean Front Hotel. I’ll be waiting! Don’t drive through the hotel grounds. She might see you. Park way past the entrance, and I’ll find you.
Chris gets out of his car.

He leans against the door.
Now he is bent over the bonnet.
Now he is kicking at one of the tyres.
Now he is at the back of the car, dialling Effe’s number on the phone.
A mechanic voice tells him that her phone is either switched off or out of coverage area.
Now he is seen leaning against the driver’s door, head bent, shoulders sagging, and one hand tapping continuously along his thigh.
He hears again and again Effe’s voice in his ear:

THE PASTOR WANTED TO SEE ME FOR SOMETHING URGENT!
He looks into the skies with his eyes shut tightly.
CHRIS

Effe, my angel, please don’t do this to me!
Finally he gets into his car with great haste, and drives off.

THE BAWA RESIDENCE – NIGHT
Chris gets out of his car. He walks up the driveway to the front door and rings the doorbell.
After a moment the door is opened by Effe. She is wearing blue jeans and a fetching pink top.
She stands just inside the room, looking at him strangely.
CHRIS

No welcoming hug for me today, my Princess?
She comes towards him, holds his upper arms and presses herself close. He can feel her trembling.
EFFE

Welcome home, my love. You are late today. How was your day?
CHRIS

Dramatic, to say the least, but seeing you always fills me with joy.
Chris plants a kiss on her right cheek, and then disengages himself.
He walks past her into the brightly-lit living-room.
EFFE

Your food is ready, love. Would you mind if I run along now?
CHRIS

I’m so sorry. You told me your Mom wanted you to help prepare the pastries for a friend’s wedding, right? Oh, forgive me! It completely escaped me.
EFFE

That’s okay, my darling.
Chris holds her shoulders and stares into her eyes in turn.
CHRIS

You look worried, darling. What’s troubling you?
Effe moves towards him, grabs him around the waist and hugs him tightly. She presses her face into his chest.
EFFE

Chris, I love you so much. Just need to tell you that I can’t live without you!
CHRIS

Of course I know that and I love you more. YOU should know that! Is something bugging you, Angel?
EFFE

I guess sometimes I need the reassurance, my love.
He smiles at her. She smiles back and turns towards the door.
CHRIS

Wait up, my love. Let me walk you to your car.
They put their arms around each other and walk towards her car, chatting and laughing gently.
He opens the car door for her, and then he gives her a huge brown envelope. She takes it and looks at him questioningly.
EFFE

Money?
CHRIS

Yes, for our account. I’ve decided to boost up the account, you know, to make our married life stress-free, at least, for the first few years. So, all the money I make shall now go straight to our account.
EFFE

How much is in here, Chris?
CHRIS

Close to ten thousand Ghana Cedis.
EFFE

Chris, darling … what’s going on?
CHRIS

Nothing, my love. Just deposit it in the account tomorrow. I want to show you I love you in every small way, and from now on, we do everything together, love. No secrets, no divisions, just the two of us loving each other, and the world can go to space.
She comes close to him, holds him, reaches up on tiptoe and kisses his cheek.
EFFE

You don’t know just how happy you’ve made me, my love. Listen, I can’t wait to be married to you. Okay, I’ll deposit this tomorrow. I’ll see you tomorrow evening then.
She backs up, and he waves as she drives out. He closes the gates, waits for several minutes looking at the closed gates.
His face is very distressed. He turns his face up to the skies and breathes deeply.
CHRIS

Damn you, Jonathan Afful, damn you to hell!
THE SPORTS CLUB CAFE – AFTERNOON
Chris turns through the entrance of the Sports Club.
He comes across a magnificent lawn tennis court, then a basketball court, all of them bordered by the expansive green of the golf course.
Arrows indicate the Car Park, and Chris swings the car to the park. He finds an empty slot and parks the car and gets out.
He hears a step behind him and turns.

Jonathan Afful is standing there looking at him somberly.
He is dressed in a white Puma sports trousers and matching T-shirt. He is wearing a Nike baseball cap, and nice trainers adorned his feet.
AFFUL

Bright Koffie is already here, Romeo. He is waiting for Effe. I’m a paid member, with access to the top floor. You can follow me up, and observe for yourself.
Chris walks slowly towards Afful. His face is filled with contempt and tight anger as he regards the older man.
CHRIS

I’m not here to spy on Effe, you bastard. I’m here to prove to you that she’s an angel, and because of that I’m not hiding from her. I’ll be there when she shows up, and let her explain whatever has turned your evil mind to such mischief, bastard.
AFFUL

That’s up to you. However, if she sees you here, she might panic, and leave or better still make up a lie. So, come upstairs with me. When she is seated, we can both go down and join them. How does that strike you?
Chris hesitates for just a moment.
CHRIS

Lead the way.
Afful takes him up some backdoor stairs to the second floor of the building, where a door opens into a bar and restaurant.
People in various sports outfits are sitting at tables, eating, chatting and drinking.
The bar is long and elaborate, and smartly-dressed waitresses moved among the guests, serving and taking orders.
Mr. Afful leads the way to a table partly hidden by artificial shrubbery. He indicates a chair to Chris.
AFFUL

Have a seat.
Afful sits down, and reaches for a box of cigarettes on the table.
He lights one, blows a cloud of smoke, and then smiles as Chris draws out a chair and sits down.
AFFUL

Mexican cigarettes. My friend gave them to me. Smells like a nun’s pussy, but it sure does have a kick! Yeah, a kinda sweet kick.
CHRIS

You imbecile!
Afful laughs hard, gags on the smoke, coughs, and giggles again.
He takes several drags on the cigarette, and then he grinds it out in an ashtray. He pulls a covered tray.
He uncovers it to reveal two bowls. One contains two balls of rice, and one filled with palm soup and meat.
AFFUL

I don’t think you want anything to drink, and I don’t think you’re here to eat either, so I’ll eat alone. Before then, see the guy sitting alone below us, at that table near the right corner? That’s Bright Koffie, Effe’s lover.
The man Afful has indicated is dressed in a black suit. He is sitting alone, drinking coffee with some pies.
He is slim and lithe, and very handsome. Chris breathes hard, and a look of pain crosses his face.
Chris’ phone dings a new message. He picks it up, opens up the message inbox and reads. It is from Effe:
MY LOVE. GOING HOME TO PREPARE YOUR DINNER NOW. HURRY UP. MISSING YOU SO MUCH COS I LOVE YOU TOO MUCH!
Chris smiles, shakes his head, and pushes his chair back.
AFFUL

(washing his hands, and his wicked eyes bore into Chris.)

Where are you going to?
CHRIS

(speaks with venom in his voice.)

Lay off, you lying son-of-a -bitch. God forgive me, but the next time you…
AFFUL

Why don’t you shut that big mouth of yours, Romeo? I don’t know what message she sent you, but she just walked in. Look for yourself.
Chris looks down, and then he exhales with a shock so great that his legs wobble.
With a look of utter pain on his face he collapses into his chair again, looking at Effe who has entered and walking towards the man called Bright Koffie.
Bright’s face lights up as he gets up and meets her. They hug, and remain close for some time.
Chris is shaking his head. His hands grab the edge of the table so tightly that the skin appears stretched.
The Koffie man is holding Effe around the waist with one hand, with his face buried in the side of her neck.
Finally they break apart and sit at the table. Effe’s face is filled with happiness.
Afful lights another of his Mexican cigarettes and sits back, watching Chris’ thunderstruck face with satisfaction.
Effe leans over and picks something off the man’s lapels, and he lunges forward as if to kiss her, causing her to sit back sharply and laugh.
Finally she reaches for her bag, and extracts a brown envelope from it.
Chris moans audibly.
CHRIS

Oh, no, Effe, oh no, please, please, no!
It is the same brown envelope he has given to her the previous night, and it still contains the money he had given her to deposit into their joint account!
She hands the envelope to the man, and he picks up a briefcase lying beside him and opens it.

He slips the brown envelope inside.
AFFUL

That, Romeo, is your money disappearing forever. That girl has no intentions of marrying you. I suspect they are trying to leave the country because I had Koffie tailed. Two days ago he submitted two completed passport forms at the immigration office. My contact at the office tells me one is in the name of Effe Kedem.
Effe now pushes back her chair; she is leaving. Koffie says something and offers his pouted lips.
She laughs, bends and kisses his right cheek. Violently Chris gets out of his chair.
In a flash Afful is up too, grabbing his arm tightly.
AFFUL

What the hell do you think you’re gonna do?
CHRIS

(snarling at him viciously.)

Get your damn hands off me!
AFFUL

Hold it, man. You can’t confront her now!
CHRIS

And why the hell not? I want an explanation right now!
AFFUL

To prove what? She will have a million reasons for it. I tell you, they’ve been working together for ages! If you will bide your time, I will give you other evidences, foolproof evidences that will help you prove to her that she’s been cheating on you all this while! If you approach her now, you’ll never know the rest of Effe’s lies.
CHRIS

(voice is tortured)

There’s more?
AFFUL

What you’ve seen is just the faint light of the dawn, Romeo! The harsh rays of the sun will really thrash your heart. If you’ll give me just one week, I’ll open your eyes, but if you confront her now, you blow everything apart!
Chris watches with sick eyes as Effe rushes out of the cafe. The Koffie man soon gets up, takes his briefcase, and leaves.
AFFUL

You saw an angel, Romeo, and understandably you fell in love with her. But she is more than a femme fatale, dude. You fell in love with the Devil’s favourite and only daughter. Go home, play her game, pretend everything is okay. In a week I’ll call you, and deliver both of them to you, red-handed. I know you don’t trust me, but if you have the heart, stay with me. Otherwise, you can go home and confront her now. The ball is on your turf now, Romeo. Are you man enough to play it right?
Chris is gasping for air. He  gets up and rushes drunkenly away.
Behind him Afful blows a cloud of Mexican smoke and chuckles heartily.

IRIS’ EAST LEGON RESIDENCE – NIGHT
Chris rubs his eyes and leans back fully, putting his head across the edge of the sofa.
IRIS

Wow, that was amazing. You really loved her, didn’t you?
CHRIS

Love is definitely an understatement, Iris. I really adored that girl. She filled my heart, you know. Hell, there was not a single second when her name didn’t ring in my soul.
IRIS

From how you described her, this Effe seems quite like a decent, lovable sort. What could she have done to make you hate her so much?
CHRIS

That’s the million dollar question, isn’t it? What did she do? Hell, what didn’t she do? Even now I find it difficult to believe how well that bitch fooled me!
IRIS

Tell me, Chris. I’m really curious to know. So, you and Effe discovered that you loved each other…
CHRIS

Wrong. I discovered that I was in love with her. To her, it was all some sort of sick game from the very bloody onset! She never loved me.
IRIS

Okay, I can understand that. So, you were greatly in love with her, but your Mom evidently didn’t like it. Elaine and her folks were scandalized. Basically the two of you were alone on the turf. It must have been a terrible period for you.
CHRIS

Yeah, it was horrible. My Mom took it really hard. She moved out of the house, you know. She said that house was mine, given to me by my late father. She had her own house, which she had been contemplating renting out previously. We met at the Supermarket each day, but it wasn’t really easy.
IRIS

And Elaine?
CHRIS

She took it really bad at first, for the first two months. She left Takoradi and dedicated her life to her work. It was bad for her, and although I tried on many occasions to get in touch with her, she cut me off. Her parents wouldn’t hear me out either. It was a very crazy time in my life, but I loved Effe so much that nothing was going to stop me from marrying her. We set a date in August for the wedding. Eventually my Mom realized that I really loved Effe, and she gave in, albeit reluctantly, I guess. She accepted Effe, and that was more than I ever hoped for.
IRIS

I guess she didn’t have much of a choice. It was either give in, or risk losing you to Effe forever. It must have been a hard decision for her.
CHRIS

Maybe, but then again she and I have always been that close. Anyway, somehow, Elaine also came back to Takoradi. She was on accumulated leave days, you know. It seemed like she had never been on leave for two years, so her employers granted her request for accumulated leave days. She came to the supermarket one afternoon, entered my office, and hugged me.
IRIS

Just like that?
CHRIS

Yeah, just like that. She cried a bit, yeah, talked about how much I had hurt and disgraced her. I apologized, told her how bad I felt about the whole matter. Well, evidently, she had decided to let it go, you know, and move on with her life. She still wanted to be friends with me, and you don’t know how happy she made me. That evening we all went home, that is, my Mom, Elaine and myself. Effe was there, you know. She always came in to prepare food for me in the evenings. The four of us had dinner that evening.
IRIS

(chuckling)

That would’ve been some dinner! Awkward, wasn’t it?
CHRIS

I don’t really remember it much, but I guess it went well, under the circumstances. Elaine amazed me the greatest. She tried, from then, to be friendly with Effe. It must have been hell for her, but she did really try, and I admired her for that. Steve was also constantly around, and you know him, he watered the grounds well. So there we were, all moving smoothly towards my wedding. My love for Effe grew in leaps each day. Takoradi was buzzing with news of my impending wedding, you know.
Iris draws closer to him. She reaches over, takes his arm and pulls him. He does not resist this time. He goes willingly into her arms, and she holds him.
IRIS

And then I guess your world fell apart? Was it some terrible revelation? I’m intrigued, Chris. What could’ve happened to make you break off with Effe, a woman I’m convinced you love dearly, even now?
CHRIS

It was just a month to the wedding when my heart was shattered, Iris. I think it all began with Mr. Afful, and then the Joint Account. Yeah, that’s it. You know, I opened a joint Bank Account with Effe. I needed to trust her, and I wanted her to have all the money she needed for planning the wedding. I went to the bank with her and opened the account. We were both signatories to it, and I was giving her money almost each week to deposit into the account. She would use part of the money in the account to finance the wedding expenditures, and also when we were married we would rely on that money. I transferred half of my personal savings into that account.
IRIS

And she spent it all?
CHRIS

You think it was that simple? Heck no! It would’ve been okay if she had just spent the damn money! But yes, my GMs, began with Mr. Afful’s visit and that account!
IRIS

Mr. Afful being the one you told me about, the man in charge of the orphanage where Effe was? Same man who wanted to rape and keep her to himself?
CHRIS

Yep. Same ugly son of a bitch … aw forgive my language, okay?
IRIS

That’s okay, Chris. I can see you’re strung tighter than a violin. And your GMs? What’s that?
CHRIS

Oh, hell, forgive me, darling. I’m dragging you into my quagmire of rot. GMs stand for Great Miseries, dear. That’s how I termed the hellish phases that crazy bitch took me through. My Great Miseries…
FLASHBACK

THE FOCUS SUPERMARKET – NIGHT
The Focus Supermarket is large and well-designed.

Late shoppers are moving busily around, some with trolleys, others with bags.
Security guards are also standing at vantage points. The upper floor also has the administrative offices.
Chris’ office is huge. The L-shaped desk is of high quality. The chairs facing the desk are beautiful and expensive.
There is a central visitors’ lounge that has classic furniture, an elaborate water dispenser and a magnificent little bar.
Chris and Steve are sitting at the visitor’s lounge, eating and laughing.
Steve puts a piece of tender chicken in his mouth and reaches out for his glass of wine.
He swirls the dark liquid around the ice cubes, and then he takes a sip.
STEVE

Man, I never thought I’ll live to see the day a chick will have your heart all tied up in knots like this! You love her. I’m now convinced of that amazing fact!
CHRIS

I love her, man. I look at that girl and I start thanking God for giving me an angel. She’s so sweet.
STEVE

And hot! Effe is really hot! Seen the legs on her? Damn…
Chris chuckles and wags a forefinger at him.
CHRIS

No, Mr. Romeo, don’t go there! Don’t let your imaginations run wild on my woman. You’ll risk a swollen jaw.
STEVE

A girl like that can give you multiple orgasms, man. I bet she’s driving you crazy in bed, and please don’t give me that bull waste story about not touching her…
CHRIS

It is true, man. Haven’t even kissed her yet. She wanna get her first kiss at the altar. It has always been her dream, and I wanna give her just that. So I’m waiting.
STEVE

Hmm. You telling me she’s a virgin, right?
CHRIS

That ain’t your goddamn business, bro.
STEVE

What the dilly-dilly-dilly-yoo! Man, why do you always get the best chicks, huh? Man, I’ve always wanted to deflower a virgin, but they’re more extinct than the dinosaurs, man!
They both burst out laughing, and just then a phone on near Chris’ arm rings. Chris picks up the receiver.
CHRIS

Hello?
RECEPTIONIST

Sorry to bother you, Mr. Bawa, but there’s a man here who says he urgently needs to see you.
CHRIS

You know how we work, Mary.
RECEPTIONIST

Yes, Sir. I told him to give his name and book an appointment, but he insists he has to see you. He says he’s on an errand for an Auntie Joyce. Should I let the security men show him out?
CHRIS

He’s from Auntie Joyce? Let him come up, Mary.
RECEPTIONIST

Thank you, Sir.
Chris replaces the receiver.
STEVE

Auntie Joyce? Woman who looked after Effe at the orphanage?
CHRIS

Yeah. She sent someone to come look for me. I wanted her to resign and be with us because Effe sees her as a mother, but it seems that bastard Afful got fired and Auntie Joyce is now the new Director of the orphanage. She promised to be here for the wedding. I hope nothing bad has happened to her.
STEVE

Let’s call it a day then, my bro. I gotta run home and rest my expiring body again. My new status as your Best Man demands that I look good from now till the D-day.
They both laugh and shake hands, and Chris escorts Steve to the door.
There is a knock, and the door opens. The man who comes in is short, obese and has a cold expression.
He is well-dressed in a white suit and a trilby. Steve looks at the visitor, and then his eyes meets Chris’.
STEVE

You want me to stay a spell, CB?
CHRIS

It’s okay, man. Nothing I can’t handle here.
Steve hesitates for a moment, his eyes still questioning, and then he nods and leaves.
Chris positions himself squarely in front of his visitor.
CHRIS

Jonathan Afful. Forgive me if I don’t offer you a seat. You know, you shouldn’t have bothered lying to the receptionist that Auntie Joyce sent you. The mere mention of your name would’ve been enough to bring you here.
Afful smiles, his voice a lazy drawl as he nods his head and begins to speak.
AFFUL

I see. That little cunt has you under her spell too. Now why am I not surprised about that? She has a specialty for that, believe me.
CHRIS

I detest you, Jonathan Afful. I am glad you came here. I take it you’ve been sacked from the orphanage? Well, guess what, I am behind it! I got into contact with some big shots, and they had you fired, you son of crazy bitch. You’re lucky they didn’t haul your sorry ass into jail, but Effe didn’t want it that way. She just wanted you out.
AFFUL

You don’t know who you’re joking with, Mr. Chris Bawa! You’re not the only one that knows big wigs. But my revenge is going to take another form, fool. It is not aimed at you, but at that stinking, shitty whore you’re going to marry.
Chris swings a fist. It crashes into Afful’s jaw. It flings the man down hard into one of the soft chairs.
Afful’s trilby comes off, and slowly he sits up in the chair. There’s blood in his nostrils and running down the right side of his lips.
Afful slowly takes a dark-blue hankie from his pocket and carefully wipes the blood from his mouth.
CHRIS

That’s for all the hell you put Effe through. Now get your miserable butt out of my office before I beat the shit out of you, idiot!
AFFUL

Just a minute, Romeo, just a minute.
He stands up and retrieves his hat. Carefully he puts it back on his head, and then he smiles.
AFFUL

You’re younger and stronger than I am, Romeo. I can’t fight you. True, you hate me, much as I hate you, and you’re capable of beating me to pulp, I know. So yes, I’ll get outta your office, but first, you will hear me out.
CHRIS

I ain’t got no time for your drivel, snake. Get the hell out of my office!
AFFUL

There is a guy named Bright Koffie. He grew up at the orphanage too. I bet Effe is telling you crap about not wanting to kiss and make love to you until you two are married. You believe her? That cunt is lying to you, Romeo. She and Bright are lovers, and have been lovers since they were both fifteen. Bright has been shagging her to death all along!
CHRIS

You stupid, stinking lying freak!
He back-hands Afful across the face, and Afful totters back with a groan of pain.
He holds up his hands in supplication, his face suddenly scared as Chris bears down on him.
His voice comes out in a screech as Chris draws back his fist to strike him again.
AFFUL

Have you checked your bank account lately, the joint account you opened with Effe?
Chris halts. His face is confused as he glares at Afful.
Afful drops his hands, straightens his coat and looks at Chris defiantly.
AFFUL

I’m going to prove to you what a snake you plan to marry, Bawa. She has no interest in marrying you, no. She’s just in for the money. She and Bright have formed a sick alliance, and she uses her beauty to trap rich men. They used to give me kickbacks, huge ones, and so I tolerated them. She always manages to get her victims to propose to her, and then claim she’s a virgin and only want to kiss for the first time on her wedding day blah blah blah!
Chris moves forward, grabs Afful by the lapels and hurls him hard toward the door.
Afful crashes into the door. Chris looks at him, enraged.
CHRIS

Afful, I won’t listen to your malicious lies! That girl is a pure angel. I trust her with my very soul. Now you get out of here before I tear your bloody head off your neck!
AFFUL

Don’t be a fool, Romeo. Let me…
CHRIS

Not another word, freak! Beat it!
AFFUL

She meets Bright every Friday at the Sports Club cafe at Beach Road, 3:00 p. m. prompt. She gives him the money she has taken from you, and probably from the fools who think they’ve got a beautiful daughter. Tomorrow is Friday, they’ll meet. You think I’m lying go there and see for yourself, but first check that bank account. Good night, Romeo. I’ll keep in touch.
He touches the brim of his hat to Chris, and then he turns, unlocks the door and goes out.
Chris stands still, as if transfixed. His face is a picture of misery. He turns and walks slowly back to his desk.
He sits down and turns on his computer. He opens the second button on his shirt and stares at the screen.
He punches some keys and stares at his computer screen.
Suddenly a look of complete shock passes across his face. His lips open in a silent scream of dismay.
CHRIS

Oh, my God!
The computer screen shows details of his joint account with Effe.
There is a list of credit entries, and then a series of huge weekly withdrawals.
CHRIS

(in a shocked whisper.)

She has emptied out the account! She has withdrawn all the money!

     The Klever Magg

Effe, shocked, is too slow to react.

Elaine’s fingers are like claws as she goes for Effe’s eyes.
Steve steps between the two girls, and Elaine’s fingers dig into Steve’s lower jaw, and blood spurts immediately.
Elaine flings Steve aside, and her next blow catches Effe flush on the jaw.
Effe drops, and Elaine attempts to stamp on her face.
Mr. Opoku drags Elaine back and pushes her roughly, and she falls to the ground.
Chris kneels and cradles Effe’s head.

There’s blood on her face, and she has passed out.
He is aware of Mr. Boateng angrily facing his old friend.
MR. BOATENG

(furiously)

Ken, if you ever touch my daughter like that again I’ll kill you.
MR. OPOKU

(angrily)

If your daughter ever touches mine like that again, I’ll kill her.
Mr. Boateng glowers for a moment, and then he looks sadly at Elaine.
He bends and helps her up.

Elaine is weeping uncontrollably.
MR. BOATENG

Get out of my house, Ken. I didn’t know finding you again will bring such chaos into my house.
Chris picks Effe’s limp form off the ground, and without another word he pushes through the crowd and walks out of the house.
DOCTOR ANAMAN’S CLINIC – NIGHT
Chris and Mr. Opoku are leaning against the walls of the Female Ward of Dr. Anaman’s Clinic.
Chris’ arms are folded across his chest whilst Mr. Opoku’s hands are shoved deep inside his trouser pockets.
The door of the ward swings open, and Dr. Anaman steps into the corridor.
A stethoscope is folded in his right hand.

Chris speaks anxiously.
CHRIS

Doc. Is she going to be okay?
Dr. Anaman holds up his hands, and gives them a bright but tired smile.
DOCTOR ANAMAN

She is okay, son. She struck her head on something blunt when she fell down. She had a little concussion, and will have a bad headache tomorrow, but she’s fine. Nothing is broken.
MR. OPOKU

Oh, thank you, dear God. Doc, does it mean she can go home now?
DOCTOR ANAMAN

No, I’ll like to keep her here for the night. She needs a lot of rest, no excitement, for the medication to really work. And then in the morning we will ran a couple more tests, just standard procedure.
CHRIS

Is she awake now? Can I see her?
Dr. Anaman looks at Chris silently for a moment.
DOCTOR ANAMAN

Do you really need to see her tonight?
MR. OPOKU

(gently)

I think he does, Doc, I think he does.
Dr. Anaman turns to Mr. Opoku.
DOCTOR ANAMAN

And you are?
MR. OPOKU

Ken Opoku. The girl’s father.
DOCTOR ANAMAN

I see. Okay, she’s conscious, Chris. You can see her, but only for a few minutes. She needs to sleep.
Without another word Chris quickly enters the private ward. The two men exchange glances and smile.
DOCTOR ANAMAN

Are you not going to see her too?
MR. OPOKU

I think he needs to be alone with her for a while. They are a pair of fools, I must admit, but I’m indeed pleased for both of them tonight.
DOCTOR ANAMAN

Hmm, I see. I got a few minutes left before my night rounds. Mind sharing a cup of coffee with me in my office, and maybe giving me a little back story about those fools? I must add, though, that Chris is a very dear soul to me. I’ve been their family doctor for ages. His mother delivered him in this clinic. I held Chris the very first second he was born. You can say he’s more of a son to me.
MR. OPOKU

Please call me Ken. I will be more than glad to have your company for a spell, Doc.
The two of them begin to walk away down the corridor.
Chris stands just inside the room and looks at her. She is lying on the metallic bed, and their eyes meet and hold.
Chris walks slowly forward and stands beside her bed. She never takes her eyes off him.
There is a bandage around her head, and the right side of her face is swollen, but she still smiles weakly at him.
EFFE

Your girlfriend is a hothead, Chris. What will she do if she realizes that you were not talking about me? I’m sure she would kill you when she finds out that the girl you’re in love with is known only to you.
CHRIS

Intuition, I guess. Isn’t there a saying that you women naturally know about these things?
EFFE

Please. Don’t tease me, Chris.
CHRIS

I’ve never been more serious in my life, Effe.
She closes her eyes, and when she opens them he sees that they are filled with tears.
EFFE

You’ve not so much as looked at me twice since I met you, Chris. You’ve never done anything to make me even assume that you love me. How can you be sure I don’t have somebody already in my life?
Chris sits on the edge of the bed, and slowly he leans over her and kisses her left cheek.
CHRIS

You don’t love anybody else, Effe. You know that I love you and I know you love me. It’s a gut feeling. Love knows.
EFFE

Oh, Chris! Please. This can’t be, no! The world you live in hates me by now! Your mother, your friends, their friends! Oh, no, we can’t live in that situation, surrounded with such acrimony! I will wilt! Already, they think I’m a demon!
CHRIS

Who cares what they think and say? They see a demon, I see an Angel. They see a usurper, I see my breath. Yes, without you, I WILL wilt. I don’t need much, really. All I need is to hear you say you love me, and put your little hand in my big one, and I tell you this, we will walk through all the rocky mountains together.
EFFE

Oh, Chris! Why didn’t you tell me about her? Things might have been different if I had known!
CHRIS

I was going to tell you tonight, but I was forced to go to that party.
EFFE

I called you, too. I wanted to tell you my father was insisting that I come with him to witness his reunion with an old friend. You didn’t pick your calls. You just sent a text message. When I called back your phone was off.
CHRIS

Don’t let us delve too deeply into reasons, my cherished one. I believe this night was created for you and I to finally face the truth, dear. Will it draw us together, or is it going to tear us apart?
She leans forward and puts her hand in his.
EFFE

I love you, Chris Bawa. I’ve loved you from the day we met. My soul loves you very much!
Chris puts his free hand on hers.
CHRIS

Welcome to my heart, Effe Kedem. My heart beats for only you today, tomorrow and forever. The world can stop turning, the sun can stop shining but my love for you will be for eternity.
EFFE

You’re already the owner of mine, Chris.
He leans forward and brushes a lock of hair off her brow.
She closes her eyes and exhales deeply.

They look into each other’s eyes and smile.

A ChrisEffe Romance

     The Klever Magg
Elaine, unaware of what is going on, links her arm through Chris’ and drags him towards the high table.
Chris’ eyes seek out Effe, but she seems to have melted into the crowd. And then, quite suddenly, Mr. Boateng approaches Chris with Mr. Ken Opoku at his side.
MR. BOATENG

Chris, my boy, meet one of my best friends from school…
MR. OPOKU

I know Chris. He’s been like a son to me all these years.
MR. BOATENG

(astonished)

Really?  How did you two get acquainted?
CHRIS

Mrs. Opoku’s shop is near the supermarket. I buy from her a lot, and I became their friend.
MR. BOATENG

Small world!
MR. OPOKU

Small world indeed. Jonas, later I’ll tell you the miracle that this young man brought to my house. By the way Effe came with me, Chris. Have you seen her?
CHRIS

(worried)

Yes, I’ve seen her.
MR. BOATENG

(directing them to the table.)

Let’s sit down. Seems Elaine is going to propose a toast.
Looking groggy, Chris goes to the High Table. Elaine gestures to him to come and stand beside her.
Chris reluctantly walks to her side, and she hands him a glass of white wine and links her free hand through his.
She smiles into his face, and then she turns to face the excited crowd.
Chris sees Effe.
She is standing between Steve and her father, and her eyes are very bright with unshed tears, and she looks so shattered and frail.
Chris looks away hurriedly because her pain is tearing his heart apart.
ELAINE

…and through the years of strife and pain, they took solace in only the strength of their love. My father always tells me the shortest distance between my problems and their solutions is the distance between my knees and the floor, and that’s how I came to appreciate the love and power of God. They have been excellent parents, and today I pray for health and more love for them. Ladies and Gentlemen, let’s toast a wonderful couple!
The crowd cheers and shouts. Glasses are raised, and as they drink applause follows.
Chris tries to disengage his arm from Elaine’s, but she holds on tight. She shakes her head at him and makes mischievous gestures at him.
Chris’ narrows his eyes at her.
CHRIS

Elly, no don’t. I don’t like that look at all. You’re not going to spring one of your surprises on me, are you?
Elaine sticks her tongue out at him and faces the crowd once more.
ELAINE

Listen now, folks. Most of you know, I mean it is no secret, that Chris here is my fiancée. We are bound by the same love that…
CHRIS

No, Elly, please stop. Don’t.
ELAINE

Well, those of you assembled here are our best friends. Since I was a child I’ve always dreamed about getting married on Christmas day. Why? 25th December is my birthday. One month ago…
CHRIS

Oh, no, Elaine. Not that!
ELAINE

(turns to him, and her eyes are hard. She speaks softly to him.)

You told me a month ago that on 25th December, my birthday, we shall get married. That’s four months away, and you proposed to me! I’ve already told my parents, and they are all happy! Don’t back down now.
CHRIS

ELLY, DON’T! Not now, please!
ELAINE

(turning to the crowd once more.)

Well, Chris and I are getting married on Christmas Day!
The crowd roars. Mr. and Mrs. Boateng get to their feet.
Madam Lois also gets up.
The applause is loud and deafening.

Chris looks at Effe and sees that her legs cannot support her anymore.
She drops dejectedly into a chair. Her shoulders are low, and her head is bent.
MADAM LOIS

Oh, my dear son, you’ve made me so happy! Let me be the first to congratulate you!
Chris backs away from her.

His face looks frantic.
CHRIS

NO, MOM!
His mother stops, hands still outstretched, and she looks as if he has slapped her.
MADAM LOIS

Chris? What’s the meaning of this?
The music has stopped. The whole place is dead quiet. Everybody is staring at Chris.

He turns and looks at Elaine.

Her face is like death.
ELAINE:

Yes, Chris? No? What do you mean by no? Didn’t you propose to me?
Chris reaches for her hand, but she draws back. Chris speaks frantically.
CHRIS

Elly, honey. I did propose. But we really need to talk. All this is a bit too fast for me!
ELAINE

Too fast for you? What do you mean by that? What’s going on, Chris Bawa? What’s this nonsense about?
MR. BOATENG

Come on, darling. We’ll talk about this later. It seems Chris boy is getting a dose of the cold-feet bachelor. We all get it at this time. Sit down now…
ELAINE

(hissing angrily at Chris)

No, Daddy! Chris is embarrassing me in front of everybody. The harm is already done. If he’s getting cold feet let him tell everyone right here and now!

She turns towards Chris, uncontrollably furious.
ELAINE

Are we getting married on my birthday or not?
CHRIS

Elly, honey, we don’t have to do this here. Let’s talk in private please. Let’s avoid this…
ELAINE

Don’t give me that crap! What’s going on, Chris? Why this attitude? Are we getting married or not? Just answer the question.
Tears flow down Elaine’s cheeks.
CHRIS

I still insist we talk in private. Can’t you at least give me that? Can we go somewhere and talk about this right now?
ELAINE

No, Chris. We do this now, right here! Are we getting married?
CHRIS

No, Elly. I’m terribly sorry but I don’t think I’m ready for that big step just yet. Please find it in your heart to forgive me. I’m truly sorry.
The silence is broken by Chris’ mother’s scream.
MADAM LOIS

Chris, son, what’s this? Are you drunk? Have you lost your mind?
CHRIS

I’m sorry, Mama.
Mrs. Boateing flies towards Chris like a lioness.
She grabs the front of his jacket, and her face is harsh and ugly with sudden anger.
RUTH

Chris, are you mad? How can you do this? Why are you embarrassing us this way?
MR. BOATENG:

(speaking harshly)

Let him go, Ruth! Leave his coat!
Elaine is weeping now. She brushes her mother aside and glares at Chris.

She is devastated.
ELAINE

Why, Chris? Why are you doing this to me? Do you hate me this much? What have I done to you?
CHRIS

I don’t hate you, Elly. You’ve shown me nothing but real love, and I appreciate it. You are an angel. I’m the problem.  I’m the monster here. I’m the ungrateful one. Please forgive me.
MR. BOATENG:

Chris, get out of my house right now! I won’t let you disrespect my daughter like this.
Chris nods and turns to leave, but his mother holds him. She glares at him, and then she slaps him on his right cheek.
Chris looks at her, and suddenly tears come to his eyes.
MADAM LOIS

What kind of witch has brought this curse on you, son? What kind of cursed evil has turned your heart like this?
CHRIS

(speaking bitterly as a single tear runs down his cheek.)

Blame me, mother! But please don’t put this on any witch! The fact that you and Mrs. Boateng have always been good friends doesn’t give you the right to force us to marry each other. I thought I loved Elaine, yes, but right now I love somebody else!
ELAINE

(stunned and bitter)

Another woman, Chris? You’ve been cheating on me with another woman?
CHRIS

It is funny, Elaine, but the only physical contact I’ve had with that girl is to hold her hand. I haven’t kissed her, or held her close, except when I danced with her, of course. I haven’t even told her I love her. Hell, I’ve been fighting it till now. I was scared to admit it. Maybe, if you hadn’t put me on the spot right now, you and I might have ended up married. But what’s the point, Elaine? Will it be fair to marry you knowing I love someone else?
Elaine”s eyes are wild.

Suddenly she looks around her at the hushed crowd.

She hisses dangerously.
ELAINE

Lord, she’s here, isn’t she? That explains it! If you haven’t told her you loved her, and if you behave this way, when you could have lied that you would marry me and later broken it, only means one thing! That slut is here! Where’s she, huh, Chris? Where’s the whore?
Chris turns away from her and begins to walk away.
ELAINE

She’s the fair girl, isn’t she, Chris? The one with Steve? Now I understand why you were staring at her like that when I kissed you, you bastard!
Alarmed, Chris turns round, and finds Elaine rushing furiously towards Effe.

Chris screams with real fear.
CHRIS:

Elaine, NOOOOO!

FLASHBACK 3

BAWA RESIDENCE – EVENING
Chris emerges from his bathroom dressed in black trousers, shoes and an unbuttoned white  shirt.
He hums a love ballad as he fixes his cuff links. His door opens, and his mother enters.
She is a buxom elderly beauty, and that morning she is dressed in a fetching kaba and slit design with a matching headgear.
She is holding a golden bracelet.
MADAM LOIS

Dear, can you fix this for me?
Chris takes the bracelet.

She extends her wrist and he fixes it.
MADAM LOIS

Are we running late? You better hurry up. You know how anxious Ruth can be when we’re late to her dinners. It won’t do to start displeasing your mother-in-law so early.
Chris chuckles as he begins to button his shirt. He tucks in, and smiles again as his mother inspects herself in his huge mirror.
MADAM LOIS

How does your mother look, my son?
CHRIS

As beautiful as ever, Mom. You’re always beautiful.
MADAM LOIS

(smiles happily, turns and busses both his cheeks.)

Hurry up then, my love. I’ll be waiting for you in the living-room.
She leaves the room, and the smile disappears from Chris’ face.
He knots his tie absent-mindedly, and just then his phone rings.

It is Effe.

Chris does not pick the call.

He speaks in a distressed whisper.
CHRIS

Oh, Effe. My dear, sorry for breaking off our date tonight. So sorry!
He picks up the phone and stares at it for a long time even after it has stopped ringing.
He sighs, and then he quickly sends a text message to Effe to the effect that some uncontrollable situation has arisen and he cannot see her that night.
And then he switches off his phone.

He descends to the living-room and finds his mother watching a sermon on television.
She reaches for the remote control and switches off the television.
MADAM LOIS

You look so handsome, my son. Your in-laws would be happy as always. I think Elaine has got the most handsome man in the world for a husband.
CHRIS

You do know how to make a man feel good, Mom. Thanks.
Putting his right arm around his mother, Chris steers her out of the door.
BOATENG’S RESIDENCE – NIGHT
The Boateng compound is filled with people. Chris and his mother are met by a well-dressed attendant and escorted through a side door to the garden.
Beautiful chairs and tables are arranged nicely on the lush green grass.
There is a lovely glass-topped dining-table in the middle, and this has five high-backed excellently-crafted chairs behind it.
The guests are either sitting down or standing. They are holding drinks and munching on sweet pastries.
Chris surveys the sizeable crowd with dismay on his face.
MADAM LOIS

What’s it, dear? It looks like you’ve seen a ghost.
CHRIS

I thought it was going to be a quiet evening, with us as the only guests. Didn’t know it’s a house party.
MADAM LOIS

Oh, Chris, stop being so dramatic. You know Ruth likes to do things in style. Anyway, they’re also celebrating twenty-five years of marriage and invited a few friends.
CHRIS

And you didn’t tell me, Mama? I remember you telling me they invited only us, and how inappropriate it would be if I didn’t come?
MADAM LOIS

You didn’t want to come, dear. I was sure if you had known it was a get-together you would’ve stayed away.
CHRIS

I had other plans, Mom.
MADAM LOIS

It’s okay, son. You had to be here. Elaine came from Accra just to be with you, and it seems to me that your plans doesn’t include her nowadays. Secondly, it is her parents’ anniversary and you should be here. Look, drop it for now. Let’s join them.
Chris still looks angry.

Mrs. Ruth Boateng joins them and speaks happily.
RUTH

Lois, my sweetest, welcome!

She hugs her friend warmly.
MR. BOATENG

(Holding a glass of wine approaches and extends a hand to Chris.)

Chris, my boy, you do look great tonight! Welcome, welcome!
RUTH

Come on, come on. You’re sitting with us at  the high table. We were just waiting for you. Now where’s Elaine?
Madam Lois gives Chris a meaningful look as she follows the couple into the garden.
Chris follows them.

Suddenly his arm is gripped hard from behind and he turns.
It is Steve, dressed in an excellent tuxedo.

Chris’ face lights up with pleasure immediately.
CHRIS

What the dilly-yoo, man! What’s gwan? Thought you were with your latest catch, what’s her name, Mimi? Didn’t you tell me you’re putting the works on her tonight?
STEVE

Dawg that broad. Turns out she’s dating a damn cop, and he’s an Inspector-General or something like that. Almost got my cheeks ripped off when that fat cow followed her to my ghetto last night.
CHRIS

Been telling you to simmer down, Romeo. You’re gonna get your butt roasted if you keep chasing the pretty skirts.
STEVE

Let me worry about my problems. You’ve got one huge bomb on your hands right now, dude.
CHRIS

Spill it.
STEVE

Let’s set the parameters first, dude. Now, have you told Effe about Elaine?
CHRIS

No. I planned to do that this night, but then the old lady kinda forced me to cancel out on Effe and come here instead.
STEVE

And of course Elaine doesn’t know you are now dating Effe.
CHRIS

I am not dating Effe, dude. To her we’re just good friends.
STEVE

And to you?
CHRIS

I’ll tell you this, because you’re more than a brother to me. I think I’ve fallen in love with Effe.
Steve looks staggered.

He empties his glass and beckons to a waiter holding a tray.
He puts his empty glass on the tray and picks a new drink.
STEVE

Boy, you’re trying to look down the neck of a bottle with both eyes, and one of your eyes is sure to pop if you continue playing around like that.
CHRIS

Hey, belt it. I’m trying to get my act together and find a way out.
STEVE

Then you better find an excuse and leave here right now, or you’re gonna get burned.
CHRIS

What the heck are you talking about?
STEVE

Effe is here.
CHRIS

(stunned, gapes at his friend without speaking for a moment.)

What?
STEVE

You heard me right. Effe is right here with her father.
CHRIS

Oh Lord, no. You are kidding me, right?
STEVE

Never been more serious in my life.
CHRIS

Oh, grapes! This is bad, really bad! But how did that happen? Why are they here?
STEVE

I spoke to her. Small world, see? That’s why I’m always telling you to get your shit together. Turns out Mr. Opoku and Mr. Boateng, your two fathers-in-law, for now, shared the same dormitory at the university, and they were both SRC executives. They got together on Facebook, and Mr. Boateng invited his old friend here to the party. Unknown to each of them, you’re banging both their daughters.
CHRIS

Cut the rot, man, I’m up to my neck here in some bad trouble. Why the hell didn’t you call me when you found out?
STEVE

(Steve half-empties his glass and points a stiff forefinger at Chris.)

Tried a zillion times. Your phone was on vacation in the Bahamas, you fool. First rule in the Player’s Basic Book of Survival is this: never switch off your damn phone!
CHRIS

My phone was off? Oh, yeah, when I sent Effe a text message I switched it off. Damn!
STEVE

And speaking of trouble, here comes the first salvo, dude.
Chris turns. Elaine is walking towards him smiling happily.
ELAINE

My Prince finally decided to come wake me up with a kiss.
She puts her arms around his neck and holds him tight.
ELAINE

Chris, my breath. I missed you so much.
CHRIS

Elly. You look beautiful.

She draws his head down and brushes his lips with hers.
ELAINE

Lord, I’ve missed you, wrestler. Wish we could disappear into my room for a while. My body aches for your bullying.
CHRIS

Behave, darling. People are watching.
He steps back, and his eyes automatically searches for people who have seen their show of affection.
Standing a few metres  behind Elaine is Effe.

Steve is standing beside her.

Steve shrugs and shakes his head sadly.
Effe looks so devastated and shattered.
She looks at Elaine, then at Chris, then back to Elaine.
There is sudden pain on Chris face as he sees the unbearable pain on Effe’s face, and the tears that suddenly roll down her lovely cheeks.
Oh, Effe!

Chris’ heart screams in agony!

Chris finished telling Iris about how he met Effe and how he was forced to take her with him to Takoradi and eventually giving her to the Opokus to take charge of her.
Chris also filled Iris in on how he had seen Effe  frequently because he was attracted to her.
Chris then goes on to tell the enraptured Iris snippets of how Effe eventually captured his heart.
FLASHBACK 1

THE OPOKU RESIDENCE – AFTERNOON
There is a party going on at the Opoku residence.
Mr. and Mrs. Opoku are in white attires.
Effe is looking absolutely breathtaking in the white dress Chris had bought for her in Accra.
There is a long table of assorted food, and a well-stocked bar area.
When Mr. Opoku stands up, the music stops and all eyes are drawn to him. He is holding a glass of sparkling champagne.
MR. OPOKU

I will like to propose a toast, please.
Effe turns in her seat and her eyes meet Chris’. She smiles warmly. Chris smiles back.
MR. OPOKU

My lovely wife and I have been married for precisely twenty years. God, being the wise ruler He is, thought it best not to bless us with any children, and we thanked Him for that. But believe me, it has not been easy. Being wealthy in Africa, and having no kids, is a great wahala, and you all know it, abi?
There is a general burst of laughter and brief applause.
MR. OPOKU

And then, out of the blue, a handsome young man knocked on our door one evening. His name is Chris Bawa. Most of you know him, yes, the same Chris Bawa who is the General Manager of The Focus Supermarket. He brought a sweet young girl called Effe to us. That was almost a year ago. We accepted Effe into our home, and we finally understood why God never let us have a child.
There is a pregnant silence as Mr. Opoku turns round and stares at Effe for several seconds with a deep loving expression on his face. He turns and faces the crowd once more.
MR. OPOKU

Effe brought not only joy and fulfilment to our home, but she fitted in so perfectly. She is the child we never had. She has woven pure magic into our hearts, and bonded us with a love we’ve never felt before. Yesterday being our twentieth anniversary, we had no greater gift than to adopt her. That sweet girl is now Effe Kedem Opoku, our dearest daughter!
There is a standing ovation.

Mrs. Opoku embraces Effe.

Mr. Opoku wipes tears from his eyes and raises his glass.
MR. OPOKU

To Effe, our cherished daughter!
CROWD

To Effe!
Mr. Opoku turns and beckons to his family.
Effe and Mrs. Opoku join him with their glasses. Mr. Opoku gestures wildly to Chris to join them.
Chris joins them at the head of the table, and Mr. Opoku shakes his hand vigorously.

They take sips from their glasses.
The music starts up again and Mr. Opoku leads Effe to the dance floor amidst cheers and cries from the crowd.
Mrs. Opoku turns to Chris, and she has tears in her eyes.
MRS. OPOKU

Chris, thank you so much for bringing such an angel into our lives!
CHRIS

The joy is all mine, Mrs. Opoku. Come on, let’s dance!
Chris takes her hand although she protests a bit, and they start to dance next to Effe and Mr. Opoku who turns to Chris after a couple of minutes.
MR. OPOKU:

Can I dance with my wife?
Laughing, Chris leaves Mrs. Opoku, turns and faces Effe.

She is smiling, and there are tears on her face.
He takes both of her hands. She speaks in an unsteady voice.
EFFE

Oh, Chris. Thank you so much! I’m so happy! I’ve never been this happy, ever!  I feel as if I will burst with happiness!I have real parents now!
Chris barely hears her. He is just staring at her. She is so absolutely lovely, as serene as the morning dew, the most ethereal diamond he has ever beheld.
CHRIS

You’re beautiful, Effe!
She exhales sharply, and her eyes become very bright. They stare at each other for a significantly long period.
Chris draws her into his arms. They start to dance slowly, eyes still locked.
Chris drops his hands to Effe’s waist.

She looks startled, but she places her hands on his shoulders. His breathing comes hard.

Just then Steve breaks in.
STEVE

Hey, selfish boy, can I have a dance with the sweet girl too?
Chris steps back, and they both look at Steve.
CHRIS

Oh, I almost forgot to introduce you. Effe, this is my best friend, Steve Hollison. Steve, meet Effe Kedem Opoku.
Steve shakes Effe’s hand.
STEVE

Hello, Effe. I’ve heard so much about you, but I really didn’t picture you this beautiful!
EFFE

Chris also told me a lot about you. Pleased to meet you.
STEVE

Come on, dance with me, sunshine!
Chris chuckles and leaves them.

He walks a little bit away, turns, and finds her eyes still following him.
He smiles, and she also smiles across Steve’s shoulder.
Chris speaks softly to himself.
CHRIS

Effe Kedem Opoku! You’re getting into my blood, girl!
Later, Chris is sitting at the high table.

A well-dressed attendant approaches with a laden tray of assorted foods and sets it down in front of him.
CHRIS

(chuckling and shaking his head)

Wow, man, how am I supposed to eat all that?
A hand falls across his shoulder, and he turns. It is Mrs. Opoku, and there is a huge smile on his face.
MRS. OPOKU

Eat, Chris. Don’t you know that you’re the Prince of our world? You have turned our hell into a blissful heaven.
CHRIS

You accepted an unknown girl into your house, Ma’am. It is God’s blessing to you. I was just a channel!
MRS. OPOKU

But God chose you to bless us, and that’s why our home shall always be yours. Go on, eat! That is a special food. Effe prepared it for you, my dear!
He looks across at the dance floor. Effe is trying to disengage herself from Steve, but he is holding on, and both of them are laughing.
Chris shakes his head, smiles briefly, and reaches for a fork and a knife.
Mrs. Opoku tucks a perfumed white napkin into his collar, and both of them laugh.
MRS. OPOKU

Thank you, Chris Bawa.
CHRIS

You’re welcome, Madam.
Chris begins to eat. The food is evidently delicious, because he swirls it around his mouth with obvious relish. The voice of Steve bursts in suddenly.
STEVE

Well, that’s what I call a lion’s share! I’ll be damned!
Chris looks up and chuckles when he sees Steve holding a single plate laden with food he has scooped from the buffet table.
CHRIS

Man, put that midget’s share aside and entertain your taste buds from my plate.
Steve sits down, picks up a fork and digs in.  They eat in silence for a while, and then Steve leans back and regards Chris with a dead pan expression.
STEVE

She cooked this, right?
CHRIS

(feigning ignorance)

Who?
STEVE

Fuck you, dude. Stop shitting me. You know who!
CHRIS

Yeah. Effe cooked it. Best morsel your palate ever flirted with, right?
Steve carefully lays his fork down and picks up a glass.
He pours red grape wine into it, swirls it in an absent-minded manner, and then he takes a long draw from it.
STEVE

(voice serious)

She’s extremely beautiful, Chris. Won’t lie to you about that. Turns out she’s also an excellent cook. You’ve been blabbing about her nonstop ever since she came here. Are you hitting on her?
CHRIS

Ain’t hitting nothing. I helped her, she now has a great family. We’re like siblings, man.
STEVE

Siblings, my ass! I saw the way you guys were looking at each other, bro. You’re going in too deep with Effe, bro, and I’m worried.
CHRIS:

Worried about what, man?
STEVE

Stop hedging, Chris. We always shoot straight with each other. I’m worried because you’re in a relationship with Elaine, a relationship that has gone really far, man. Your parents are aware of what’s going down. Now, Elaine doesn’t know you’ve brought this angel to town, and it seems to me you’ve gone to great lengths to keep Elaine and Effe apart.
CHRIS

(looking exasperated)

What exactly is your point, Steve?
STEVE

My point is that what you are doing is not healthy, man. I would’ve been more comfortable if you’ve told your mother and Elaine about Effe. I’m your brother, Chris. If you feel something for Effe, come clean with Elaine and her parents. Your mother too deserves to know. These things shouldn’t be hidden, man. They have a tendency for blowing up, and believe me they do cause a mess when they do!
CHRIS

Thanks, bro. I’ve been confused for a while, I admit that. See, I’ve always been comfortable with Elaine. She’s no angel, and I’m no God, but we’ve managed to get something going. Maybe it’s because her mother and mine feel so strongly about the whole thing, but being with Effe is different, man. She’s beginning to bring out feelings I’ve never had for any other woman, and frankly it’s been scaring me. But thanks, I’ll try and put my act in order, okay?
Steve nods, and then reaches out and pats Chris’ shoulder gently.
STEVE

Let’s enjoy this food. Damn, she can cook! No wonder she’s driving you bonkers.
CHRIS

She grows in a man’s blood, man, she sure does!
FLASHBACK 2

VARIOUS LOCATIONS
Chris and Effe are at the beach, sitting under coconut trees. There are drinks, flasks and paper plates around them.
They laugh happily and walk hand-in-hand on the seashore. Chris chases Effe around and plants a kiss on her cheeks when he catches her.
They face the horizon with the sun behind them.
Chris is opening a car door for Effe, touching her hand as she enters, laughing into her eyes as he closes the door.
He reaches across to hold her hand as he drives and she turns to him, startled, glances at their clasped hands, and demurely looks out the window.
Now Chris is showing Effe around his huge supermarket. There is a charged moment when she turns round and finds him standing just behind her.
He reaches out to steady her, she puts her hands on his shoulders, and for a moment they stay like that, caught in the electric moment of awareness.
Chris and Effe are seen eating at a plush restaurant. She is sitting across from him.
Her hair is tied back in a ponytail. He gets up, walks behind her chair, and slowly removes the hair band.
He straightens her hair, walks round, notices a lock of stubborn hair across her brow, extends a forefinger and gently rolls the hair over her right ear.
She is staring, other people are staring. There is deep silence between them in the restaurant.
He sits down without looking at her, but her eyes are huge and her face is holding a tender loving expression as she looks at him.
Chris is now seen ringing a doorbell, and Mrs. Opoku opens the door.
Chris laughs with her, and Effe joins them. They run to Chris’ car, and wave to Mrs. Opoku. They get in and drive away, leaving the Opoku residence behind.
Chris driving back in. It is night, the sky is dark. Chris walks Effe to the door.
She hesitates and then shyly hands him a small parcel.
He peels off the wrapping and finds a small box.
He opens it and finds a beautiful silver wrist bracelet. He is evidently quite taken aback.
Wordlessly he drapes it around his right wrist and locks it, and then he leans over and kisses her right cheek.
She closes her eyes, and as he steps back she quickly opens the door and enters, closing it behind her.
She is seen leaning her back against the door. On the other side of the door Chris presses his forehead against the door.
And then, after sometime, he turns and walks slowly back to his car…and as he drives away Effe parts the curtain and watches him, her hands caressing her cheek where he had kissed her!
Her eyes are bright with the unshed tears of love.
